A game studio was looking to clear out inventory of older game CDs. In researching the Nancy Drew character on which the games were based, a reference was found to Nancy’s favorite candy bar called Koko Kringle. That led Zing HQ to suggest producing an actual physical version of the candy bar.
Using a custom label to complement the game branding, a chocolatier developed a custom chocolate bar. The marketing manager offered a Koko Kringle bar with each purchase of a CD on clearance. He put out a teaser on social media where Nancy Drew game fans raved.
The sales campaign was such a success that it was repeated several times. Those who’d been able to get one with their CD posted selfies with the Koko Kringle bar. Some game fans later pleaded for opportunities to buy cases of the candy bar.
The client was understandably thrilled with the result. Though not a typical approach for a software company, bringing an element of the story to life proved to really resonate with fans of the games. So much so that later a lollipop was used for promotions along with a masquerade mask that appeared in subsequent games.
